Used Electric Cars in Italy 2026: The Price Gap With Petrol Has Nearly Disappeared
Used-EV valuations in Italy are up 18.5 percent since January 2026, and the average price premium over petrol cars has collapsed from 7,300 to 1,340 euros. Here is what it means for buyers and sellers.

The used-EV discount is no longer a rounding error
For years, buying a used electric car in Italy meant paying a premium over an equivalent petrol model, worrying about range, and double-checking battery health out of pure anxiety. In the first half of 2026, that script flipped. Used-EV pricing is now the only segment of the Italian second-hand market growing at double-digit rates, while petrol and diesel values are flat or falling, and the price gap with equivalent combustion cars has shrunk to a fraction of what it was a year ago.
The numbers: up 18.5 percent since January
According to market data picked up by several trade outlets, used-EV valuations in Italy rose 5.4 percent month-on-month in June 2026, taking the year-to-date gain to 18.5 percent [1]. Petrol cars closed the same month down 0.3 percent, still up 4.2 percent since January but 2.8 percent below where they stood a year earlier [1]. The second quarter as a whole closed 15.2 percent above the first, pushing the broader European used-car price index to 116.1 points, up 13.5 percent year-on-year, with electric vehicles flagged as the most dynamic segment of the entire used-car market [2].
The gap with petrol has nearly closed
The most striking figure comes from the Center for Automotive Research, cited by Quattroruote: the average price difference between an electric car and an equivalent petrol model narrowed to roughly 1,340 euros at the start of 2026, down from 7,300 euros just a year earlier [3][4]. That is an 80-percent-plus collapse in twelve months. For used-car buyers, where list-price differences matter even more than on new cars, a direct comparison between an EV and a similarly specced petrol car now makes far more financial sense than it did in 2025.
Why it is happening: faster depreciation cuts both ways
The paradox is that used EVs are getting cheaper precisely because they depreciate faster than combustion cars. Figures cited by Quattroruote and Vaielettrico put average three-year depreciation for an EV at 48.5 percent, versus 37.3 percent for diesel and 36 percent for petrol [3][4]. That is bad news if you are selling a near-new EV, but very good news if you are buying one used: a three- or four-year-old electric car now comes with a much steeper discount than an equivalent-age petrol car, while running costs (electricity, servicing, and reduced road tax in several Italian regions) remain clearly lower.
Real models, real numbers
This is not just abstract statistics. Several market analyses point to specific models whose used prices have more than halved compared with their original list price from two or three years ago [5]. A second-generation Renault Zoe (2018-2020) now trades between 9,000 and 13,000 euros, a Nissan Leaf from the same period sits between 10,000 and 14,000 euros, and a 2019-2021 Tesla Model 3 Standard Range has slid into a 22,000-28,000-euro range — figures that would have been unthinkable for these cars three years ago. It is precisely these mid-range models, with well-run-in batteries and residual warranty coverage still largely intact, that are driving the recovery in used-EV values.
What this means if you are buying
If you have been putting off going electric while waiting for a more reasonable price, this year's data suggests the moment arrived sooner than expected. Three checks still matter regardless: the battery's State of Health (requestable via an OBD diagnostic scan or directly from the seller), the remaining coverage on the battery warranty (typically 8 years or 160,000 km from most manufacturers), and compatibility with the charging network you will actually use day to day, not just the fast chargers near your house. An EV with SoH above 90 percent and two or three years of battery warranty left, priced close to an equivalent petrol car, is on current numbers a rarer bargain than it sounds — and an increasingly reachable one.
What this means if you are selling
Sellers of used EVs are in a favorable demand environment, even though the absolute euro amount they pocket is still shaped by faster depreciation than combustion models. Demand is rising, time-to-sale is shrinking for listings with verifiable battery data and clear documentation, and presenting a charging history or an up-to-date SoH report can be the difference between a listing that sits and one that closes within weeks.
The practical takeaway
The used-EV price advantage in 2026 is not a statistical blip; it is a trend confirmed across several months and multiple independent sources. Buyers should look past the old assumption that electric always costs more and treat a used EV as a genuine price alternative to petrol, not just an environmental one. Sellers should lead with battery transparency — that is what separates a listing that lingers from one that sells fast.
