Italy's Used Car Market Slowed in July 2026, but the ACI Data Tells a Different Story for Sellers and Buyers
ACI's monthly Auto-Trend bulletin shows used-car transfers down 2% in July, but behind the headline lie rising deregistrations, falling exports, an ageing fleet and a fast-growing used-EV segment. Here is what it actually means if you are selling or buying a used car right now.

A market that is slowing down, not falling apart
Italy's used-car market lost pace in July 2026: ownership transfers for cars came in at 287,960, down from 293,900 in July 2025, a 2 percent drop. That is the headline number from Auto-Trend, the monthly statistical bulletin the Automobile Club d'Italia (ACI) compiles from Italy's vehicle registry (PRA) and released on 7 August 2026 [1][2]. Used motorcycles slipped too: 70,168 transfers versus 71,645 a year earlier, down 2.1 percent [1].
Read in isolation, those two numbers just say slowdown. But buried inside the same bulletin are at least four signals that matter more than the headline if you are about to list a used vehicle for sale, or you are out shopping for one right now.
The used-to-new ratio is still enormous
Despite the monthly dip, the secondhand market still dwarfs new-car sales: 213 used cars changed hands for every 100 new ones registered in July [2][5]. Across the first seven months of 2026 that ratio settles at 180 to 100 [1]. It is a simple fact that a negative headline tends to bury: in Italy, buying and selling used is not a fallback to new cars, it is the structural backbone of the whole market, and it stays that way even in a soft month.
Deregistrations up, exports down: fewer cars are leaving the country
The most useful number for anyone selling is buried further in the report. Car deregistration filings with the PRA hit 111,416 in July, up from 109,034 a year earlier, a 2.2 percent increase [3][4]. But that growth is not uniform: scrappage rose 7.8 percent, while exports abroad fell 9.3 percent [3][4].
In practice, that means fewer used Italian cars are leaving the country to be resold elsewhere than a year ago. Historically, a meaningful slice of Italy's secondhand fleet, mid-range diesels and estate cars in particular, has flowed toward Eastern Europe and North Africa. If that channel is cooling, sellers benefit from a domestic buyer pool that is not being thinned out by competing foreign buyers, while shoppers benefit from decent used stock that, in a stronger export year, might already be on a transporter headed for a port, instead staying in circulation at home.
The car fleet keeps getting older
Another structural signal concerns the age of the vehicles actually changing hands. Cars between 20 and 29 years old accounted for 16.2 percent of all ownership transfers, up from 14.4 percent in July 2025; cars older than 30 years rose from 2.5 to 2.7 percent [1][5]. That confirms a trend already visible in previous months: Italy's car parc is ageing, and with it grows the share of vehicles that demand extra scrutiny at purchase time, service history, timing belt condition, any structural corrosion, while also feeding a genuinely growing niche market, the same one behind the rising interest in youngtimers and early restomods.
Used EVs are growing far faster than the market around them
Bucking the overall decline, used electric cars kept accelerating: they made up 1.3 percent of July's ownership transfers, up 17.4 percent year over year [5]. That absolute share is still small, but the growth rate, nearly ten times that of an overall market that is shrinking, is a real signal that the secondhand EV pool is finally starting to widen, as the meaningful wave of 2021-2022 EV registrations comes back onto the market with three or four years of genuine ownership history behind it.
What the first seven months actually show
Zoom out to the January-July period and the picture looks far less dramatic than a single soft month suggests: used cars are down a modest 0.4 percent, used motorcycles are up 1.6 percent, and the combined total across all vehicle types is essentially flat [1]. July, notably, followed a strong June, up 5.2 percent for cars according to the prior month's bulletin, so the more accurate read is a market oscillating around a stable average rather than one in structural decline.
What this means if you are selling or buying now
If you are selling, the domestic market is not being drained abroad, so local demand remains a solid backstop. But with overall volumes softer, competition between similar listings intensifies, so it pays to be more careful than usual with photos, an honest description of the car's real condition, and full documentation: service records, roadworthiness inspection (revisione), ownership history. That is exactly what separates a listing that disappears into the noise from one that actually generates enquiries.
If you are buying, expect a higher proportion of cars between roughly 15 and 30 years old among current listings: inspect them more carefully, especially the timing belt or chain, suspension condition, and corrosion at known weak points. If you are specifically hunting for a secondhand EV, the pool is expanding quickly right now, meaning the first real batch of EVs with genuine multi-year ownership histories, often already discounted well below their original new price, is finally reaching the used market in meaningful numbers.
