Used 125cc motorcycle: licence, prices, checks
A guide to buying a used 125cc motorcycle in Italy: who can ride it on an A1 or B licence, motorway rules after Law 177/2024, real asking prices, a mechanical checklist and yearly costs.

Looking for a used 125cc motorcycle in Italy and not sure where to start? This is the most traded segment of the market: scooters like the Honda SH, A1-licence naked bikes, and city bikes you can ride on a car licence alone. Because it is often a first vehicle, it is also where buyers make the most mistakes. This guide covers licence rules, real asking prices, mechanical checks and running costs.
Who can ride one: A1, A2 or B licence
An A1 licence covers motorcycles and scooters up to 125 cc and 11 kW from age 16. With a B (car) licence, at 18 or over, you can ride a 125 that meets the same A1 technical limits, but only if the licence was issued in Italy: the allowance is national and not reliably recognised abroad [1]. If you plan trips across the border, keep that in mind.
Before buying, check the maximum power on the registration document: the 11 kW ceiling applies to everyone. A 125 that exceeds it, for example after an ECU tweak, can bring fines and insurance trouble.
Motorways and ring roads: what changed
For years 125s were barred from motorways and urban expressways. The Highway Code reform (Law 177/2024), in force since 14 December 2024, lowered the threshold: the ban now applies to combustion motorcycles under 120 cc, so a 125 is allowed, while for electric bikes the threshold dropped to 6 kW [2]. Riders must be adults with an A, B or higher licence; A1 or A2 holders need at least two years of licence [2].
In practice a 125 is still not a motorway bike: at 110-120 km/h the engine is working hard and safety margins are thin. But being able to use a short ring-road stretch makes daily commuting far easier.
How much a used 125 costs
Prices are best checked across several listings. As an example, used Honda SH 125 asking prices on moto.it vary widely: about 2,290 euro for a 2014 with 56,000 km, 2,490 euro for a 2019 with 10,600 km, 2,900-3,200 euro for 2023 models, and nearly 3,800 euro for a near-new 2026 example [3]. A 2010 with 100,000 km from a private seller is listed at 800 euro [3].
These are asking prices from a small sample, not sale prices, so treat them as an order of magnitude. Rule of thumb: low mileage does not justify a high price once a bike is over ten years old, because tyres, drive belt, battery and plastics age even when parked. The right comparison is always the same model, year and maintenance history.
What to check before you buy
A 125 has simple mechanics, but a few checks make the difference:
- Paperwork: registration document, ownership certificate, and a frame number that matches the one stamped on the bike. Make sure there are no administrative stops or liens.
- Service history: ask for invoices or stamps. Oil, air filter, spark plug and the drive belt (on scooters) are where owners save money, and the next owner pays.
- Cold start: it should start straight away, with no persistent blue or white smoke and no metallic noises.
- Brakes and tyres: measure pad thickness, read the manufacture date on the tyre sidewall (tyres older than five or six years should be replaced) and test the ABS where fitted.
- Suspension and frame: fork tubes without oil leaks, no play in the steering, no signs of repairs after a crash.
- Electrics and key: lights, indicators, dashboard, and on models with a smart key, make sure you get every key.
- Test ride: hills, a firm braking test, and gear changes or the variator without jerks.
If you are not an expert, half an hour with a trusted mechanic costs little compared with a mistake worth a few hundred euro.
Yearly running costs
According to a Quotidiano Motori estimate, a 125 scooter costs about 625 euro a year at 5,000 km, first insurance class and northern Italian residence. That includes third-party insurance (roughly 90-200 euro, 120 in the example), road tax (about 25 euro), one service (about 100 euro), fuel (about 300 euro) and tyres (about 80 euro) [4]. The roadworthiness inspection, every two years, costs about 45 euro at the Motorizzazione and about 79 euro at private centres, and is not in that total [4]. Check the next inspection date on the registration document before you buy.
Insurance varies most from person to person: age, province and merit class can double the premium for a new licence holder. Get a quote before you close the deal.
Which one to choose
For year-round city use a big-wheel scooter like the SH holds its value and has parts everywhere. For weekend fun a 125 naked or light sports bike gives more thrills but wears faster, especially if the seller is a young rider who kept it at the limit. For short trips on a tight budget, less sought-after models are fine as long as the maintenance record is clear.
Takeaway: the checklist to bring with you
Before paying: compare at least five listings of the same model, check the registration papers and frame number, ask for service records, take a test ride, work out insurance, road tax and inspection costs, and pay by traceable methods. The ownership transfer needs a notarised bill of sale and the paperwork at the PRA or an automobile-registry online desk. If you are selling your own 125, the same rules apply in reverse: tidy papers, collected service records and a price in line with real listings. On VendiVoce you can list your bike and reach people looking for it.
