Opel Frontera Manual 2026: New or Go Used?
Opel just launched the Frontera Start, a 100-hp manual entry point priced from 17,900 euros on promotion. Here is what the fine print hides, and when a used compact SUV still wins.

The news: a 17,900-euro Frontera, with a manual gearbox
On September 18, 2026, Opel widened the Frontera lineup with a new entry trim, Start, paired for the first time with a 1.2-liter turbo petrol engine making 100 hp, no electrification at all, and a six-speed manual gearbox. That is a genuine departure: until now the Frontera only came as a mild hybrid or a full electric, never with a powertrain this basic.
The official list price starts at 22,700 euros, but the number every outlet is running with is different: 17,900 euros, keys in hand, before registration tax. That near-5,000-euro gap is not an open discount. It only applies with a trade-in or scrappage of an old car, combined with financing. Anyone paying cash, with nothing to hand over, starts from the full list price.
Even in its cheapest form the equipment is not bare-bones: a six-way adjustable Intelli-Seat driver's seat, air conditioning, a smartphone tray in the center console, 16-inch steel wheels with black hub caps, rear parking sensors, lane-departure warning, and a 10-inch information display. The boot runs from 460 to 1,600 liters with the rear seats folded, on a body roughly 4,380 mm long.
Where Start sits in the rest of the range
Above the 100-hp engine, the Frontera offers two 48V mild-hybrid variants of the same 1.2 turbo, at 100 and 136 hp, priced between 24,500 and 28,000 euros. At the top sits the fully electric version, 113 hp, with either a 44 kWh battery or, in the longer-range configuration, a 54 kWh pack rated up to 408 km WLTP; that range spans 29,900 to 31,900 euros.
The manual Start, then, is not just an entry point. It is a deliberate move to push the Frontera's starting price back under the psychological 20,000-euro line, at a moment when the average price of a new car in Italy has climbed past 36,000 euros, according to data Quattroruote published in February 2026. It fits a pattern showing up across the mainstream segment: manufacturers are bringing back simpler trims and engines, often without electrification, specifically to stay under that ceiling.
Why the promotion is not for everyone
One detail is worth isolating: 17,900 euros is not the list price, it is the conditional price. It requires a car to trade in or scrap, and it requires taking out financing. Anyone who already has an old car to hand over and is happy to finance the purchase gets a genuinely strong deal. Anyone who wants to pay cash, or has nothing to trade, is looking at 22,700 euros instead, a number that changes the math considerably against a comparable used car.
That is where the used market comes back into the picture, and in Italy it remains enormous: according to UNRAE figures, more than 4.2 million used vehicles changed hands in 2025, up 7 percent year on year, while average prices have settled after the 2022-2023 spike. January 2026 saw used-car transfers drop 6.7 percent, the steepest monthly fall in 40 months, a sign the used market is cooling on price just as new-car prices keep climbing. On paper, that combination favors buying used right now.
When the new Frontera Start actually makes sense
It makes sense for someone who fits the promotion exactly: an old car to trade in or scrap, willingness to finance the purchase, and a preference for factory warranty and a zero-kilometer odometer. It also makes sense for anyone who wants to sidestep the risk of a used car with an uncertain maintenance history entirely, or who drives little and would rather not think about upcoming service intervals for the first few years.
When a used compact SUV is still the smarter buy
If there is no car to trade in, if the buyer wants to pay without financing, or simply wants more space and equipment for the same money, a second-hand compact SUV remains the more flexible choice. The segment the Frontera competes in is crowded with a few-year-old, low-mileage alternatives, often still under an extended manufacturer or dealer warranty. The gap with new is not only price: it is also choice, since the used market still carries trims, colors and configurations the current new-car lineup no longer offers.
The checklist before choosing used over new
Anyone weighing a used compact SUV against a new Frontera Start should check, in order: the service book, and whether the declared mileage matches the actual wear; the date of the last timing belt or chain replacement, a cost private sellers often leave out of the conversation; the roadworthiness inspection due date, verified on the vehicle's registration document rather than trusted to the listing text; and the registration transfer fees, which should always be budgeted separately from the agreed price. Only then does it make sense to compare a well-kept used car's total cost against the Frontera Start's full, non-promotional price.
The takeaway
The 17,900-euro Frontera Start is a real offer, but a conditional one: it needs a trade-in or scrappage plus financing, or the price reverts to 22,700 euros. With the average price of a new car in Italy now above 36,000 euros, and a used market that moved more than 4.2 million vehicles in 2025 at prices that have largely stabilized, the decision belongs on total purchase cost, not on the smallest number printed in the ad. For anyone without a car to trade or without appetite for financing, a carefully inspected used compact SUV is still, often, the better deal.
