Audi Overtakes Fiat in Recent Used Cars: What the 2026 Shift Really Means
For the first time, Audi has overtaken Fiat among used cars up to ten years old in Italy. It is not a German surge, it is the echo of a Fiat new-car decline that started two decades ago. Here are the numbers, and what they mean for anyone selling or buying used right now.

For six years, AutoUncle, the European platform that aggregates used-car listings, has been tracking brand market share among Italian dealerships. In the second quarter of 2026, those numbers recorded something that had never happened before: among cars no more than ten years old, Audi overtook Fiat. It is a symbolic overtaking, since Fiat is the most deeply rooted brand in Italy's car parc, but it is also a very concrete signal of how the used-car market that sellers and buyers rely on every day is shifting.
The overtake, number by number
In the second quarter of 2026, Audi accounted for roughly 9% of used cars up to ten years old sold through Italian dealerships, against roughly 8% for Fiat. The gap looks small, but it is the first time the Ingolstadt brand has moved ahead of Turin's on this specific segment. To grasp how big the shift is, look back five years: in the summer of 2021, on the exact same metric, Fiat held more than a seven-point lead over Audi. In under five years, that margin didn't just shrink, it flipped.
What's more telling is how it happened. Audi's share never spiked. It stayed remarkably stable, oscillating between 8% and 10% in every quarter analysed since 2021. There was no sudden German surge. It was Fiat that lost ground, quarter after quarter, slowly and steadily.
This isn't a problem of today, it's an echo from years ago
The explanation has nothing to do with the quality of the used Fiats on the road, and everything to do with how many new Fiats were registered back when those same cars were built. Today's used-car market is, quite simply, a mirror of the new-car market from five, eight, ten years earlier. And the data tell a clear story: Fiat's share of new-car registrations in Italy ran around 24% between 2005 and 2010, slipped to 21% in 2011-2015, then to 18% in 2016-2020, and down to roughly 10% in 2024-2026. Fewer new Fiats sold back then mechanically means fewer recent Fiats available on the used market today.
Audi, VW and the other German premium brands don't need huge new-car volumes to hold a stable used-market presence: their buyers tend to trade in more often, and stronger residual values keep feeding a steady stream of recent cars back into the secondary market.
How the picture changes by vehicle age
Breaking down the Q2 2026 figures by vehicle age sharpens the picture further. Fiat accounts for roughly 17% of sales among cars over 15 years old, 16% in the 11-15 year band, 11% in the 6-10 year band, 8% in the 3-5 year band, and only around 7% for cars under three years old. In other words, Fiat's historic dominance of the Italian used market is still rock solid at the older end of the fleet, but it thins out the closer you get to recent registrations. Looked at across every age band combined, Fiat is still Italy's number-one used-car brand, ahead of Audi and Volkswagen, but that lead is now built almost entirely on older cars.
The bigger picture: Italy's used-car market in 2026
This overtake lands in a used-car market that, overall, is cooling after months of growth. According to UNRAE data, May 2026 closed with about 444,625 ownership transfers, down 3.1% from the 458,876 recorded in May 2025, with net transfers falling as much as 6%. January 2026 had opened even worse, down 6.7% year-on-year, the weakest monthly reading in 40 months. Over the first five months of the year, transfers are still in slightly positive territory overall, up 0.7% year-on-year, for a total of roughly 2.4 million transactions.
On the fuel side, petrol remains the most common choice in the used market in May 2026, at 38.6% (39% year-to-date), followed closely by diesel at 37.9%, while hybrids keep climbing and now make up 12.8% of monthly used sales. Another figure worth noting: according to ACI's Auto-Trend observatory, for every 100 new cars registered in Italy in the first quarter of 2026, 179 used cars changed hands, underlining just how central the used market remains to how Italians actually buy cars, even as the new-car market itself picks up speed: July 2026 registrations rose 3.9% year-on-year, and UNRAE has revised its full-year forecast upward, to 1.61 million units.
What it means if you're selling or buying used right now
For sellers, the practical takeaway cuts two ways. If the car is a Fiat over ten years old, demand remains broad, that's still the segment where the brand is strongest of all, and the relative scarcity of recent stock doesn't touch it. If it's a Fiat first registered in the last three to five years, though, competition from increasingly affordable used German premium models is real, and it matters more than ever to get the listing right: a clean maintenance record, a verifiable mileage history, and photos that show the car at its best.
For buyers, the overtake is actually quiet good news. The relative scarcity of recent Fiats can push prices up on those specific models, while the broader, steadier supply of used German premium cars, Audi but also BMW and Mercedes, which together now account for over a fifth of used-car searches, opens up real negotiating room on cars with a higher trim and equipment level, often for a budget similar to a nearly-new Italian city car. Either way, the advice is the same: look past the badge and weigh the trim level, real mileage, battery health on a hybrid, and full maintenance history. Those remain far more reliable indicators of a used car's real value than the brand's market share alone.
