CATL launches a global battery repair network: what it means for buying a used EV in Italy
At Ning Day 2026, CATL announced battery repair coverage in 100 cities by year end, with costs up to tenfold lower. Here is what that actually means for anyone buying or selling a used EV.

What CATL just announced
On August 14, 2026, at the Ning Day 2026 event in Haikou, China, CATL — the world's largest EV battery maker, with more than 40% of the global market — announced it will expand its Ning Service repair network to 100 cities worldwide by the end of the year. At announcement time the network already runs eight directly-operated centers in China plus two international sites, one in Norway and one in Istanbul, alongside a parallel franchise network of 1,376 service centers across 84 countries. That is not a minor detail for anyone in Italy shopping for a used EV: the number one fear of buying a battery-powered car once the warranty runs out has always been the same one. What happens, and what it costs, if something breaks.
How Ning Service actually works
The interesting part isn't the headline city count, it's the method. CATL's new hubs run on robotic diagnostics and, wherever possible, replace only the damaged modules or cells rather than the entire pack — a technique known as cell-to-pack repair. On top of that sit mobile repair vans with roughly 800 km of range, designed to reach a stranded car rather than making it limp to a fixed center. The stated target is to hand the car back within 72 hours, and in some cases within 48 hours thanks to those mobile units. Another meaningful shift: the earliest Ning Service centers only handled cars running CATL cells, but the newest ones are open to any EV brand, to the point that CATL now claims it can service 76.8% of the electric cars sold in China.
The numbers that change the math
CATL is talking about cutting repair costs by up to tenfold. The figures circulating put a typical intervention at roughly 1,360 euros instead of 13,600 (in dollars, around 1,480 instead of 14,800). To see why that matters, look at what an out-of-warranty repair costs today: in Italy, a full battery pack replacement, when it's genuinely necessary, still runs 10,000 to 20,000 euros, with the pack itself priced anywhere from 3,000 to 10,000 euros depending on the model and capacity. If modular repair becomes the norm outside China too, the total cost of owning an out-of-warranty used EV shifts meaningfully — and so does the resale value of models currently discounted precisely because of that risk.
Is Italy, or Europe, covered yet?
Not directly, not yet. The two international sites live in Norway and Turkey, and the 100-city push through the end of 2026 leans heavily toward China and a handful of key markets. That said, CATL is simultaneously building out battery aftersales services across the EMEA region with digital, data-driven tools, and the existing 1,376-center franchise network across 84 countries suggests broader real-world coverage than the directly-run centers alone imply. For anyone buying in Italy today, the practical takeaway is different anyway: the market's direction is unmistakable, and both wait times and post-warranty repair costs are set to fall over the next 12 to 24 months, not rise.
What EU rules already say about battery coverage
Every new EV sold in Europe already carries a minimum battery warranty of 8 years or 160,000 km, with a manufacturer obligation to intervene once capacity drops below a threshold typically set between 70% and 80% of original health. Some brands, like BYD, now push coverage as far as 250,000 km. Layered on top is EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542, in force since February 2024, which introduces transparency and durability requirements and, from 2027, a genuine digital battery passport readable via QR code, carrying a full history of state of health, charging cycles, and repairs. For anyone selling or buying a used EV, that will be the first time this data is verifiable without simply trusting the seller's word.
Repair versus replace: what actually happens out of warranty today
One fact surprises most people: even today, out of warranty, a full pack swap is less common than assumed. Most failures involve a handful of modules or cells, not the entire pack, and specialist workshops already replace only the damaged part wherever it's technically possible. What CATL is promising isn't inventing modular repair, it's turning it into a fast, low-cost, globally standardized default — done by robots instead of the scarce specialized labor that remains the real bottleneck in most countries, Italy included.
What to check before buying a used EV in Italy
Three things matter more than anything else. First, the battery's state of health (SoH), checkable today via dedicated OBD diagnostics or the manufacturer's own app where available. Second, how much of the 8-year, 160,000 km warranty is left: a car about to fall out of coverage in a few months deserves a different price than one with five years still on the clock. Third, the model itself: some manufacturers already offer bundled battery replacement or upgrade programs starting around 3,500 euros, far closer to the new repair economics than to the old 15,000-euro full-pack swap.
The takeaway for anyone buying or selling on VendiVoce
You don't need to wait for CATL's centers to open in Italy to benefit from this shift: the market's direction alone — modular repair, falling costs, longer warranties, more transparent data — already lowers the perceived risk of buying an out-of-warranty used EV. Sellers can document battery condition to justify their asking price; buyers can negotiate with data instead of guesswork. The fear of a battery failure that wipes out a car's value hasn't disappeared overnight, but in 2026 it has considerably less to stand on than it did two years ago.
